Tera goes free-to-play

En Masse has announced that Tera is going free-to-play (F2P) in February. If you’ve never played Tera, you should. It has the coolest combat and the hottest looking avatars in MMOs. By themselves, those two attributes couldn’t keep players in the game, not if it meant paying an on-going subscription fee. Tera just didn’t have enough content or varied activities to compete against other MMOs, especially not Guild Wars 2. However, as a F2P, it’s well worth playing and possibly for a long time.

Congratulations to En Masse for understanding F2P, too. They understand the money is made from giving players a F2P game modeled after Guild Wars 2 rather than the  incredibly annoying, so-called F2P Electronic Arts foisted on the gaming community when Star Wars: The Old Republic went F2P. En Masse is giving players access to “the real Tera. Not some watered-down trial version.” The only thing it seems you’ll be paying for is vanity items; given how cool Tera’s characters are, you might be spending a lot.

Tera is an awesome fun game. For free, it’s simply an amazing dream deal. If you haven’t tried it, yet, you should.
