GW2: Going for 1000 gold – Thank you, Anet

I’d just like to say, “Thank you, ArenaNet.”

Remember I’ve said the Living World can change everything. It does and it did. Escape from Lion’s Arch is making me rich, fast. I might make it to 1000 gold pretty quickly, now.

What happened?

The new Spinal Blade Backpiece requires a lot of mats to make, specifically lots of iron, steel, mithril, orichalcum, and assorted dust. And if you want the ascended version, you’re going to need damask – already expensive – elonian leather, and watchwork mechanisms. Dulfy has a nice guide, if you’re interested, here.

I saw the price of iron going up, deldrimor steel doubling in price, and elonian leather more than tripling in price. I took advantage of that. I salvaged a bunch of iron from alternate sources rather than buy the iron, directly (Alternate sources tend to lag behind the actual mat prices.). I already had a bunch of platinum, so I didn’t need much of that. I made some deldrimor steel and sold that.

Plus, I have lots of elonian leather.

This is a little contrary to what I’ve said about selling stuff you have too much of, but if you know ArenaNet, it makes some sense. I made my elonian leather, every day after I came back to the game, and got my tailoring to 500. I only have about 40 elonian leather in my bank; I’m sure others have much more. Yes, I could have sold it and got about 90 silver for one, but that just seemed to cheap to me, especially with damask selling for about 13 gold, so I held on to it.

And here’s the other thing: ArenaNet appears to be intent on raising the prices of any mat that’s cheap. (Right now, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out gold and silver are cheap.) It seemed to me elonian leather was pretty cheap, so I mostly just made it and stored it. I’ve sold about 10 pieces, so far. I’ll probably sell more.

And don’t forget this stuff is time-gated: You can only make the thread for it, once a day. That’s another reason to make it when you can. You never know when you might need it, since ArenaNet seems to regularly come up with new reasons to use mats.

So while it’s a good idea to sell your stuff while you’re trying to build up your gold, once you have a nice pile of gold hang on to stuff you think might be too cheap. Also, stuff like damask and elonian leather you should make every day.

Once, again, thank you, ArenaNet.
